Alberta Wood WORKS! Award
May, 2007
Marshall Tittemore Architects’ Solara Canmore wins the Alberta Wood WORKS! Award for Multi-Unit Residential development! This award recognizes Solara for incorporating a variety of unique wood products and applications both structurally and architecturally.
Alberta Wood WORKS! is a Canadian Wood Council initiative established to promote the use of Albertan and Canadian wood products. The annual Wood WORKS! Awards celebrate excellence in wood use and construction and are an opportunity to recognize organizations that foster wood use and innovative solutions in wood construction and design.
The woodwork on Solara was designed to harmonize with the spectacular landscape of the surrounding mountainous Canmore area. MTA’s approach to the timber application and detailing was simple and modern, yet robust. Fir timber structure was used throughout Solara to support and form exterior decks and roof forms. A combination of vertical and horizontal stained cedar siding was applied to the exterior façade in three distinct earth tones, chosen to accentuate the timber detailing. A variety of wood treatments was used to articulate and distinguish the residential components of Solara from the amenity structures.
Solara is a luxury mountain vacation community consisting of 200 apartment-style residential units configured in three lodges. Solara features underground parking and a full complement of amenity activities including a clubhouse complete with concierge service, as well as a spa and fitness centre, a ‘kid zone’ and a state-of-the-art theatre space.
