Peter Lougheed Centre - MTA and HOK Canada / Urbana Architects Collaborate
by Kamal Yalbir
The strength of two diverse yet well respected firms was the basis for this collaboration to be selected as the prime consultants for this $95M Renovation and Addition Project for the Calgary Health Region's Peter Lougheed Centre. The Peter Lougheed Centre serves a very crucial role in responding to the medical needs of the citizens of Northeast Calgary and a larger rural community.
The project will be phased over six years and be comprised of three key stages. The first and largest will be a new five storey East Wing (North Tower) housing key new medical services and additional patient beds and a rooftop helipad serving a new Emergency Ward. The second stage will be another addition to the East Wing comprised of a new South Tower this will expand the available services and add crucially needed beds to the hospital. The final stage will be extensive renovation strategies which will see the interior of the hospital get a much needed face lift and bring the centre into the new millennium. Major renovations to the existing facility will upgrade and expand surgical suites, mental health, transplant and renal facilities.
This project will be undertaken while maintaining a full range of medical and emergency services. The phasing will allow the hospital to continue in its daily operations while keep to a busy schedule of renovation and upgrading. |
