In 1991 the addition to the Whyte Museum added an important new public art gallery to the existing building. The administration and research components were also enlarged to become a multi-function space for both public use for special events as well as for archival storage. The building thus becoming more open to the public with greater usage by a broader range of use and visitors.
As the Whyte Museum increasingly becomes a public use facility, its architecture should also become more open and transparent. The 1991 addition is an internally organized building with little connectivity to the outside world. The addition to the main entry, with its large stairs and glazed entry, celebrates arrival and the linkage between the inside of the museum with the outside community. The glazed foyer or lobby area serves as the "living room" of the museum with a stone hearth.
