MTA has been selected by Parks Canada to commence design on the Burgess Shale Interpretive Centre. A museum and service building in Yoho National Park shall be dedicated to the natural heritage of the Burgess Shale Fossils and the national parks. The building will be an addition to the existing Travel Alberta tourist pavilion.
The Burgess Shale Fossils are significant because of their great age, and their exquisite preservation. They were designated as an Unesco World Heritage Site in 1981, and later became a protected site within the Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site.
The design of the Museum to house the "world's most significant fossil discovery" enhances the concepts of preservation and protection.
The facility also functions as a bermed "buffer" between the Trans Canada Highway and the Community of Field, located on the east side of the Kicking Horse River.
